Northern Democrats Honour Sir Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Balewa’s Legacies

The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has paid tribute to two iconic leaders, Sir Ahmadu Bello and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, whose visionary leadership shaped Northern Nigeria and the nation.

In a statement yesterday, the League expressed its profound gratitude to the fallen military officers and public servants, both Muslims and Christians, who sacrificed their lives in service to Nigeria.

Dr Ladan Salihu, the spokesperson for LND, highlighted the ultimate sacrifices made by these leaders, noting that their loss significantly altered the course of Nigerian history.

“These leaders were our heroes, who paid the ultimate price in their service to the North and Nigeria. Their loss marked a turning point, leading to military interventions, civil war, and deepening national divisions,” said Dr Salihu.

The statement reflected on the enduring legacy of Sir Ahmadu Bello and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, recognising them as pillars of unity, integrity, and purpose.

According to the league, their sacrifices continue to inspire the pursuit of a united, just, and prosperous Nigeria.

Dr Salihu also recalled the tragic events of January 15, 1966, which led to the loss of these leaders and deeply affected the nation.

In his statement, he prayed for the souls of the departed and sought divine forgiveness for the bloodshed and division that followed.

He called for peace, dialogue, and reconciliation as essential to healing the nation.

“We humbly seek divine forgiveness for the bloodshed and division that scarred our land,” Dr Salihu said.

“May their sacrifice serve as a reminder of the importance of peace, unity, and mutual respect in our nation.”

The League of Northern Democrats also prayed for the continued protection of the North and Nigeria, asking for wisdom and courage to guide leaders and citizens toward building a more harmonious future.
