Former Liverpool Goalkeeper Karius joins Schalke

A former goalkeeper for Liverpool, Loris Karius, signed with Schalke, a team in the German second division, on Tuesday. This is the latest in a string of clubs he has joined in an attempt to turn his career around.

Karius has moved between teams in Germany, England, and Türkiye, but he hasn’t been able to get any playing experience.

The 31-year-old received a lot of backlash after making several mistakes in Liverpool’s 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in 2018, which was his final game for the team.

After a collision with Real defender Sergio Ramos, Karius was diagnosed with a concussion five days after the game.

He was most recently with Newcastle, a Premier League team, but his contract ended in July 2024, so he is now a free agent.

In a statement, Karius said, “Schalke is a big club with passionate fans,” and he added, “I’m looking forward to training with the team.”

Karius joins Schalke, a group of fallen giants who are also hoping for a change of luck.

Schalke, one of Germany’s biggest teams with seven Premier League titles, is only six points above the German second division’s relegation play-off spot.

Karius, who arrived in Gelsenkirchen on Friday for a medical exam, is anticipated to be Schalke’s backup goalkeeper behind Justin Heekeren.
