5 Killed In Ondo Communal Clash

Five persons have been killed in another communal clash at a boundary linking Akure and Idanre communities in Ondo State.

A source informed LEADERSHIP Weekend that tension had been mounting for days before it ensued to the deadly clash yesterday.

It was gathered that the remains of those killed were initially brought to a nearby police station before they were taken to the morgue in Akure.

At the time of filing this report, Gbalegi village where the incident occurred had been deserted.
Police spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami- Omisanya, said seven people who had charms and seven single-barrel guns with a cache of live ammunition and expended ones had been arrested by the police.
Odunlami-Omisanya said the police further combed the nearby bush and areas and found four bodies with bullet wounds.

“The Ondo State Police Command received a distress call that a group of thugs mobilised to the Gbalegi area (a disputed land between Akure and Idanre) attacking the people of the said area.

“The police on receipt of the information moved to the scene and arrested seven people,” Odunlami-Omisanya, said, adding, “The CP calls for caution in handling cases related to boundary issues.”

The spokesperson further urged the communities involved in the land dispute to approach the law court for proper redress rather than resorting to self-help violence.
