14 Killed in RSF Assault Near Besieged Darfur

A paramilitary assault near the besieged North Darfur capital of El-Fasher has claimed the lives of 14 civilians, according to activists on Sunday.

The attack occurred on Saturday in the northeastern Um Kadadah area of North Darfur state, the local resistance committee reported, describing the incident as a treacherous attack.

The resistance committee, part of a vast network of volunteer groups providing aid during Sudan’s protracted conflict, said the assault adds to the devastation caused by 21 months of fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

El-Fasher, home to approximately two million people, has been under RSF siege since May and remains a flashpoint in the Darfur conflict.

The Sudanese army is battling to hold onto its last stronghold in the vast region as nearly all of Darfur has fallen under RSF control.

The paramilitary group also extended its dominance into neighbouring Kordofan and central Sudan.

The broader conflict that erupted in April 2023 plunged Sudan into chaos, killing tens of thousands and displacing over 12 million people.

The United Nations called it one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent history.

Both the RSF and the regular army stand accused of committing atrocities, including attacks on civilians, residential areas, and medical facilities.
