Four Moroccan Truckers Missing in Sahel’s Hotspot
Four Moroccan truckers have gone missing in a region between Burkina Faso and Niger known for insurgent activity, a diplomatic source revealed on Sunday.
The truckers, travelling aboard three vehicles, lost contact on Saturday while on a route between Dori in Burkina Faso and Tera in Niger, according to a source from Morocco’s embassy in Burkina Faso, speaking anonymously.
The diplomatic source described the route taken as very high-risk, citing the presence of terrorist cells and armed groups operating in the area.
The frontier region between Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali has been a stronghold for jihadist factions affiliated with the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda for years, posing significant dangers to travellers.
Efforts to locate the missing truckers are ongoing, but the precarious security situation in the Sahel complicates rescue operations.
The region has been plagued by instability and escalating violence, displacing millions and creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
