Wike Addresses Streetlight Controversy in FCT Road Projects

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that the present administration has set a new benchmark in road construction and infrastructure development, with most flagged-off projects completed or nearing completion. He added that roads such as those in Bwari, Gwagwalada, and the Law School area are now operational, showcasing the administration’s commitment to delivering projects that meet international standards.

During a recent press briefing on Sunday, the minister addressed concerns about the inclusion of streetlights in these projects. He clarified that the initial contracts for six major roads did not include provisions for streetlights. However, recognising the need for comprehensive infrastructure, the administration later directed contractors to include them. He stressed that while this adjustment requires additional time, streetlights have already been installed on some completed roads, such as those in Kubwa, demonstrating the administration’s responsiveness to public needs.

He also highlighted a new approach for recently flagged-off projects, which already include streetlights in their contractual agreements. These roads are expected to be completed with functional lighting by May or June this year. However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges with vandalism and urged residents to report incidents promptly.

The minister emphasised that securing public infrastructure requires community involvement. “Policing communities is not only for security agencies; it’s for all of us to be part of it. Some of us, you’ll see somebody stealing cable, somebody tampering with solar panel, and you’ll say nothing.”

He concluded, “All those that are involved will never come out of it. And people will learn lesson from it.”

Wike reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to fulfilling its promises and maintaining transparency in project execution. With additional projects planned for satellite towns, the FCT administration continues to prioritise the development of both urban and rural areas, ensuring equitable growth across the territory.
