Lagos Assembly Urges Action Against Scavengers, Manhole Thefts

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and relevant agencies to tackle the growing issue of scavengers and manhole thefts in the state.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, a motion by Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) highlighted concerns over the increasing vandalism of public infrastructure.

Yishawu praised the government’s efforts in developing key infrastructure, such as roads, manhole covers, pedestrian bridge railings, and drainage systems, aimed at improving road safety, reducing traffic congestion, and mitigating flooding.

However, he expressed alarm over the theft of manhole covers, streetlight cables, and other public assets, warning that continued vandalism could result in accidents, drainage blockages, and delays in infrastructure development.

“The safety of residents and the government’s developmental efforts will be compromised if this trend persists,” Yishawu stated.

Speaker Mojisola Meranda stressed the need for vigilance, urging residents to act as whistleblowers and calling for public awareness on waste separation and reporting suspicious activities.

Desmond Elliot decried the unchecked presence of scavengers in Surulere, calling for a ban on scavenging.

Kehinde Joseph highlighted tragic incidents in Alimosho, including the death of a House of Representatives member’s son due to open manholes, urging better enforcement of laws.

Lawmakers proposed several measures, including sanctions against scavengers, the use of materials like glass-reinforced plastic for manhole covers, and greater regulation of scrap metal collection.

The Assembly also recommended awareness campaigns and a whistleblower system to tackle theft and vandalism.
