Bail Granted to Ex-Shari’a Judge Accused of Assault

A retired Upper Shari’a Court Judge, Mahmoud Shehu, was granted bail on Tuesday by a Magistrate Court in Zaria, Kaduna State, over allegations of assaulting a blind housewife.

Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Adamu Salisu, who presided over the case, set the bail conditions requiring Shehu to provide two sureties who are civil servants on Grade Level 10, along with a deposit of N100,000.

The sureties must also submit their promotion letters, passport photographs, full addresses, and phone numbers. Should Shehu fail to meet these requirements, he will be remanded in a correctional facility until the next hearing date, scheduled for February 11, 2025.

Shehu was re-arraigned on charges of forcefully entering the victim’s home, using force, and assaulting her. These charges violate Sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State 2017.

Prosecutor Adamu Abubakar stated that the incident occurred on September 6, 2024, when Shehu allegedly locked the main gate of the victim’s home, entered her room, and assaulted her. Two other women who attempted to intervene were also reportedly assaulted.

The victim required medical treatment at the PHC Tudun Wada following the attack.

When questioned in court, Shehu denied the allegations.

The case was initially filed on September 10, 2024, at the Magistrate Court in Tudun Wada, Zaria. However, after multiple adjournments, the Presiding Judge, Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi, recused himself and transferred the case to Chief Magistrate Court 1 Chediya for reassignment.
