Obasa Absent From Lagos Assembly Plenary

Mudashiru Obasa was absent from the Lagos State House of Assembly plenary on Monday, despite his insistence that he remained the speaker following his impeachment.

This comes after Channels Television reported that the Assembly had instructed its officials to present valid identity cards for access to the premises, signalling stricter security measures. A heavy police presence was also noted around the Assembly as Mojisola Meranda officially assumed the role of Speaker.

Monday’s plenary marked the third session presided over by Meranda since Obasa’s removal. Obasa has been absent from the last two sittings.

During Monday’s session, the remaining 39 lawmakers, including Meranda, were seen gathering for a group photograph at the Assembly premises to address growing speculation over division within the House, following Obasa’s public claim that he remains the Speaker. Obasa had argued that his impeachment was not carried out properly.

Meranda is expected to appoint chairpersons for the standing committees overseeing various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in Lagos State later today.
