The Nigerian Government generated approximately N2.4 billion in 2024 from marriage contracts through its marriage registry at the Ministry of Interior, according to Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior.
The ministry generated over N3.2 billion from expatriate quota applications, resulting in a 150 percent increase in revenue overall. The government also repatriated 828 foreigners to their home countries during the year.
During a media session in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo disclosed that the ministry’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) exceeded its target for 2024.
The approved target was N1.2 billion for business expatriate quotas and naturalisation, but the ministry generated N4.51 billion.
“In 2024, we had a revenue target as approved by the national assembly of N1.2 billion for business expatriate quotas and naturalisation but what we were able to generate was N4,508,306,968.5,” he said.
The minister credited the increase to the ministry’s efforts to address revenue leakages, particularly through automation and zero remittance measures, which helped close gaps and boost revenue.
The National Assembly Joint Committee on Interior commended Tunji-Ojo for the ministry’s successful budget performance in 2024.
