Student’s Convulsions Cause Panic at Sierra Leone School

A student at SLC Government Secondary School in Makeni district reportedly began convulsing during an agricultural class today, triggering chaos and panic as she allegedly bit a teacher who tried to assist her.

Other students also became ill, prompting an emergency response, and between five and ten individuals were rushed to Makeni Government Hospital, according to school authorities.

The cause of the incident remains unclear. Osman Kamara, Information Officer for the Makeni Division of the Sierra Leone Police, stated that some witnesses attributed the convulsions to an alleged “demonic act.”

Kamara confirmed that the affected student is a Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 learner. Authorities have not yet spoken to her parents or school officials to determine what triggered the incident. Panic spread further as other students reportedly fainted in the overcrowded classroom.

No fatalities have been reported, but Kamara assured the public that investigations are ongoing, with the school principal cooperating with the police.

In response to the incident, all students were sent home, and only police officers and school authorities remained on-site. Kamara reassured the public that the situation was under control.

Eyewitnesses reported that several students are still experiencing symptoms of fainting and distress. The school has urged calm and advised students and parents to resume their normal activities, while medical personnel continue to monitor those affected at the hospital.
