A Nigerian-born cybersecurity expert, Dr. Fene Osakwe, has made history as the first African to be nominated for the prestigious Cybersecurity Personality of the Year Award in the United Kingdom.

His recognition underscored his outstanding contributions to the field and highlighted the global impact of Nigerian professionals in the tech industry.

This was made known by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), whose chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, congratulated Osakwe on his groundbreaking nomination, describing it as a testament to his excellence and dedication.

“We are delighted to see Dr. Fene Osakwe’s hard work and dedication recognised in this way,” Dabiri-Erewa said in a statement signed by NiDCOM spokesman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, which was published on NIDCOM’s X handle (formerly twitter) on Tuesday.

“His achievement is a shining example of the talent and expertise that Nigerians possess, and we look forward to celebrating his success.”

She further emphasised the significance of Osakwe’s recognition on the global stage, stating, “As the first African to be nominated for this award, Osakwe’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration to Nigerians and Africans around the world.”

Osakwe, a multi-award-winning cybersecurity professional, career mentor, and best-selling author, is the sole African nominee in this category, competing against leaders from 11 other countries.

The award, established in 2014, honours outstanding individuals, teams, and organisation within the global cybersecurity sector. The ceremony, scheduled for March, will be attended by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, further underscoring the importance of this recognition.
