Nigeria Earns N2.4Billion from Marriage Registry in 2024

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that the Nigerian government earned approximately N2.4 billion from marriage contracts through its marriage registry in 2024.

He announced during a media briefing with agency heads under the ministry in Abuja on Tuesday.

Tunji-Ojo also stated that the government would reinforce security measures around the nation’s borders to control the influx of irregular migrants.

The minister highlighted that the marriage registry had become a significant income source, noting that in 2023, the ministry surpassed its projected revenue from marriage contracts, collecting over N892 million by October 31, 2023.

Furthermore, he disclosed that more than N3.2 billion was generated from expatriate quota applications, marking a 150% increase in total revenue.

The issuance of expatriate quotas also contributed substantially, with over N1 billion raised in 2023, surpassing the N600 million target by over N600 million.
