Israel must prepare for war with Turkey, gov committee warns

An Israeli government committee has issued a warning about the potential for a future war with Turkey, citing Ankara’s growing ambitions to restore its Ottoman-era influence in the region. The Nagel Committee, tasked with evaluating Israel’s defense budget and security strategy, presented its findings on Monday, raising concerns about Turkey’s regional aspirations and their potential impact on Israel’s security.

According to reports from The New Arab, tensions with Turkey could escalate, particularly if Syrian factions align with Ankara. The committee cautioned that Turkish-backed forces might act as proxies, posing a significant threat to Israel’s stability. “The threat from Syria could evolve into something even more dangerous than the Iranian threat,” the report stated, underscoring the risks of Turkey’s growing influence in the region.

The findings and recommendations of the report were submitted to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Among the key proposals was a recommendation to increase Israel’s defense budget by up to NIS 15 billion ($4.1 billion) annually over the next five years. This budget boost would enable the Israeli military to confront potential threats effectively.

The report also emphasized the need for Israel to invest in advanced weaponry, strengthen air defense systems, and bolster border security. These measures, the committee argued, are essential for preparing Israel to address emerging threats. “Iran has long been our greatest threat, but new forces are entering the arena, and we must be prepared for the unexpected. This report provides us with a roadmap to secure Israel’s future,” Netanyahu remarked in response.

The committee’s findings come amid heightened regional tensions. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently reaffirmed Ankara’s readiness to intervene in Syria to prevent territorial divisions, pledging to take “necessary measures” if any risks to Turkey’s interests emerge. The report also coincides with Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has led to the deaths of over 45,885 Palestinians and strikes on Lebanon and Syria.
