Nigeria observed the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day on Wednesday, a solemn occasion to honour the sacrifices of military personnel who gave their lives to defend the nation’s sovereignty and unity.
This annual event, traditionally held on January 15, also commemorates the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.
The central ceremony took place at Eagle Square in Abuja, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu. The President was attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the UAE.
The event featured military rituals, including a symbolic gun salute, the laying of wreaths, and the release of white pigeons symbolising peace.
Dignitaries present included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, service chiefs, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and members of the diplomatic corps. Also in attendance were military widows, veterans, and families of fallen soldiers.
Vice President Shettima and other officials reaffirmed the nation’s gratitude to its armed forces and called on Nigerians to promote unity and peace.
Across the country, state-level observances mirrored the solemnity of the Abuja event. Governors and officials participated in ceremonies, laying wreaths and announcing various support measures for veterans, widows, and the families of fallen heroes.
In Kogi State, Governor Ahmed Ododo declared free health insurance for the families of fallen soldiers, emphasising the collective responsibility to support them.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun urged citizens to remember and assist these families daily.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara pledged ₦50 million to widows to enhance their livelihoods.
Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting widows and veterans, citing a previous ₦100 million donation.
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde pledged improved welfare for veterans and donated vehicles and funds to the Nigerian Legion.
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris provided significant financial support to widows and military personnel.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah called for material and emotional support for the families of fallen heroes, while Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo emphasised the importance of upholding their sacrifices by fostering national unity.
President Tinubu, in a social media message, urged all Nigerians to embrace peace and unity.
“Let us eschew violence and divisive tendencies for a peaceful and prosperous nation. Let us all become ambassadors of peace,” he wrote.
