Mikel Arteta and Edu could be on the verge of sealing a huge January transfer just days before the window closes. The Gunners have endured a very quiet first month of 2024 with Marquinhos’ return from a loan spell at Nantes the only transfer to be announced, however that could change shortly.
Last January, Arsenal welcomed Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho however Arteta’s hands have been tied for new signings this time round. That is because over £200million was spent by the north Londoners ahead of the 2023/24 season with Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz joining.
To comply with FFP rules, funds are scarce and that is the main reason why no players have been added to Arteta’s squad. As a result of their financial situation, football.london understands Arsenal are on the lookout for loan deals in the January transfer window, to cover for the loss of players due to absence and injury.
Minimal opportunities have been presented to Arsenal but there is still a few days left of the winter trading period and that could still change. Nordi Mukiele is a defender available in the market with Paris Saint-Germain open to allowing him to depart on a temporary basis.
Bayern Munich were in talks for a deal but instead opted to permanently sign Sacha Boey from Galatasaray. While no incoming currently looks on the cards, an exit could be on the way soon for a player that is highly rated by Arteta.
Earlier in the season, Charles Sagoe Jr made his senior debut in Carabao Cup action against Brentford as part of a front three with Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson. In other cup competitions, Arteta has been reluctant to utilise some of the younger talent which certainly suggests he is fond of Sagoe Jr and his comments after the clash against the Bees was particularly telling of that.
“Chaz [Sagoe Jr] was probably one of the most consistent players we’ve had in the under-23s for a few months. He’s been training with us quite a lot and it’s about giving opportunities to people and if we don’t give it today, when are we going to give opportunities to our youngsters? I’m really happy that he had a good experience.”
Now, the 19-year-old looks set to be securing his first minutes away from Arsenal. According to Jeorge Bird, Sagoe Jr was not involved in the Arsenal Under-21 squad to face Wolves earlier this week as he is expected to leave on loan this month.
Championship side Sunderland are said to be the club he will be joining with the academy product to follow in the footsteps of Emile Smith Rowe. Prior to his emergence in the first-team squad, Smith Rowe spent six months at Huddersfield in England’s second tier with those minutes in the league below helping shape his step up to the Premier League.
