BREAKING: Nigeria Lost Over ₦67 Billion Property, 100 Lives to Fire

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has revealed that fire outbreaks caused an estimated N67.1 billion in property destruction in 2024.

Speaking at a news conference at the FFS headquarters in Abuja, the Service released a statement quoting its Controller General, Abdulganiyu Jaji, emphasising that over the same period, at least 100 fire-related fatalities were also reported.

However, according to Jaji, the Service salvaged N1.94 trillion in property last year.

“In 2024, the FFS recorded an anticipated property loss of N67.1 billion and successfully salvaged N1.94 trillion worth of property.

“The FFS responded to fire and other emergencies that same year, saving 30,890 lives while losing over 100,” he stated.

Jaji urged all fuel station owners, petrol tankers, petrol refilling stations, petrol cylinder users, and the general public to adhere to safety procedures and regulations, stating that fire outbreak incidents may increase during the harmattan season when humidity levels are low.

According to the controller general, the Service will keep achieving its objectives this year by implementing strong plans, increasing operational effectiveness, and taking proactive measures.

“Using state-of-the-art technologies like the National Fire Detection and Alarm System (NAFDAS) and the Fire Alarm App known as N-Alert, we will also concentrate on increasing awareness and speeding up response times,” he added.

He urged Nigerians to support the repeal and re-enactment of the Fire Service Act of 1963, saying that “if this is achieved, it will reposition the Service to enhance effective service delivery.”

He also praised President Bola Tinubu for approving the purchase of cutting-edge firefighting equipment and remodelling the National Fire Academy.
