Death Toll From Niger Tanker Explosion Increases to 98
The tanker explosion that devastated Dikko, Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State, has claimed 98 lives. A tanker carrying petrol overturned and spilt its contents last Saturday.
An update on the development was provided in a statement released on Monday by the director-general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba-Arah.
“A tanker carrying petrol crashed on Saturday, and another tanker was brought to transfer the contents,” he said, referring to the explosion.
He stated the incident destroyed over 20 stores and caused the injuries of 69 people.
President Bola Tinubu subsequently established a high-level committee to look into the concerning incidents of tanker explosions on the country’s roadways.
Additionally, the state government had urged the Nigerian government to act swiftly on the Minna-Suleja road project, which was responsible for the region’s high accident rate.
