Ethiopia Opens First Humanitarian School in Addis Ababa

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society inaugurated the nation’s first humanitarian school on January 27, 2025, during a ceremony at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa.

The school’s mission aims to “build a just, peaceful, and inclusive society” while nurturing a generation of leaders committed to creativity, research, and education.

Abera Tola, President of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, described the school as a memorial for victims of the Tigray war, stating, “This initiative seeks to educate future generations to uphold humanity and respect individual dignity.”

Abera highlighted the importance of addressing the wounds of war through education to prevent future humanitarian crises and violence.

Extensively researched in collaboration with universities and institutions, the school is situated in Addis Ababa’s Saris Aday Ababa area. Offering a one-year diploma programme with nine course modules across two semesters, the school is now operational.
