Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, has accused Darfur region of Sudan of committing international crimes adding that crimes are being used as weapons of war for so many that the law is meant to protect from these types of excesses.
He added that his office was taking necessary steps to put forward applications for warrants of arrest in relation to crimes allege to be committed and have been committed in West Darfur.
Khan call on everyone in El-Fasher, Al-Geneina, and across Darfur comply with international humanitarian law.
He added that he gave a closing argument before the trial chamber of the ICC on Ali Muhammad Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Mr. Ali Kushayb case who suspected of 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Darfur, Sudan.
That trial focused on crimes allegedly committed between August 2003 and April 2004 and likened it to similar crimes being committed now.
Khan requested that concrete action be taken in relation to the warrant issued by the ICC in relation to former President Omar Al Bashir, Mr. Hussein, and also Mr. Harun.
The Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, stated, In August 2022, the ICC Prosecutor delivered his briefing to the Security Council from Khartoum, the capital which was marked as an unprecedented event in the history of the court, reflecting the political will to engage with the ICC as part of the principle of legal complementarity, which affirms the primacy of Sudanese jurisdiction over the ICC, making the latter a court of last resort.
The Sudanese Permanent Representative said, there are now over 170 malicious daily attacks involving bombs, shells, and missiles targeting infrastructure and hospitals in Darfur. The militia has not stopped there but has also imposed restrictive measures in the form of a tight siege, limiting citizens’ freedom of movement to access healthcare and restricting the entry of food supplies. Michael Imran Kanu, Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, addressed the media after the Council on behalf of the members of the Security Council that are State parties to the Rome Statute to the International Criminal Court.
