ICC Confirms Arrest Warrant for Freed Libya Police Chief

The International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed on Wednesday that it had issued an arrest warrant for Osama Almasri Najim, the head of Libya’s judicial police, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The confirmation came a day after Italy released him, despite his arrest in Turin on Sunday under the ICC warrant.

The ICC stated that Najim, who allegedly oversaw Tripoli’s Mitiga detention centre, is wanted for crimes including murder, rape, sexual violence, and torture, committed since 2015. These atrocities were reportedly carried out against detainees based on their religion, perceived immoral behaviour, or affiliations with armed groups.

Najim was arrested in Turin following a tip from Interpol but was released on Tuesday without consultation with the court.

The ICC expressed concern, stating it is still seeking verification of the steps Italian authorities took in his release.

The release has sparked political controversy in Italy, with opposition parties demanding an explanation from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Critics argue that Italy’s failure to follow through with the ICC’s request sends the wrong message regarding its commitment to international justice.

The ICC, which is tasked with prosecuting the world’s worst crimes, reminded Italy of its legal obligation to cooperate fully with the Court as a signatory to the Rome Statute.

Human rights groups have long condemned conditions in Libyan detention centres, where violence and torture are rampant.
