Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police, has conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the government and people of Niger State following Saturday’s sad tanker explosion at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna motorway.
In a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasised the critical need for adherence to road safety protocols, warning against negligence and disregard for regulations that lead to such catastrophic events.
The statement also noted that the IGP has directed State Commissioners of Police to strengthen the Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) within their commands. In collaboration with other traffic management agencies, they are to enforce strict compliance with traffic regulations on highways.
The IGP urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and comply with traffic rules to prevent similar tragedies.
While praying for the departed souls, the IGP called on stakeholders, including transport operators and the general public, to prioritise safety and responsibility in their operations to prevent future occurrences.
The tanker explosion has claimed 86 lives, leaving the community in mourning and raising serious concerns about safety measures in the area. Additionally, the number of injured has risen to 55, with one fatality recorded at the healthcare facility in Dikko.
