Steven Gerrard has parted ways with Al-Ettifaq after 18 months in charge, with the decision made by mutual consent.
Gerrard, who took the reins of the Saudi Arabian club in July 2023, had signed a two-year contract extension in January 2024, which would have kept him at the club until 2027. However, Al-Ettifaq’s performance under his leadership saw them secure only five wins from 17 league matches this season, leaving them just five points above the relegation zone.
“Football is unpredictable and sometimes things don’t go the way we want,” said Gerrard in his farewell statement. “However, I leave with great respect for the club and the country. I have no doubt that the work being done will bring success in the future, and I wish the team the very best for the rest of the season.”
Al-Ettifaq club president Same Al Misehal praised Gerrard’s impact on the club. “He changed the club for the better, and that will never be forgotten. The firm foundations he helped build will guarantee a bright future.”
Gerrard, 44, had previously enjoyed success with Rangers, leading them to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021. He also managed Aston Villa before taking up his role at Al-Ettifaq. Despite his efforts, his tenure in Saudi Arabia ends with the team sitting 12th in the league.
During his 59 games in charge, Gerrard won 23 matches. He was one of the highest-paid managers globally, reportedly earning £15 million annually.
