Kano Empowers 7,158 Women with Goats in ₦2bn Initiative

Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has distributed 7,158 goats to empower 2,386 women as part of a N2 billion program to alleviate poverty and encourage economic self-sufficiency.

A statement released on Tuesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, indicates that this distribution is the second phase of the Women Empowerment Initiative under the Livestock Fattening Programme of the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.

“The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing poverty through innovative and inclusive approaches,” he said.

“Yusuf said the initiative was part of his administration’s broader strategy to empower vulnerable groups and foster economic independence among women and youth in the state,” he added.

With an estimated value of N2.3 billion, the initiative supplies livestock to women throughout all 44 local government areas in Kano State, with each participant given three goats to aid their livestock entrepreneurship endeavours, promoting financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.

“By integrating women and youth into the agricultural value chain, the programme aims to enhance household income and reduce dependency on government aid,” he said.

The spokesperson also mentioned that future phases of the program will involve providing 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to women and youth.
