Lagos, FG Sign MoU for 68km Green Line Rail Project

The Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Government’s Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to commence exploratory work on the 68-kilometre Green Line rail project. The line will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced the agreement on Tuesday, calling it a major step in enhancing the state’s transport infrastructure.

“This landmark project will improve connectivity, ease movement, and boost economic activities between critical areas in Lagos,” Omotoso stated.

The Nigerian Government has allocated ₦175.84 billion in the 2025 budget for national priorities, including infrastructure and workforce welfare. Of this, ₦146.14 billion is earmarked as counterpart funding for the Lagos Green Line Metro Rail project.

The Green Line will traverse key areas, including Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ajah, linking them with Marina and the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

Omotoso also highlighted the state’s ongoing infrastructure improvements, noting that 36 road projects were completed in 2024, while 51 more are in various stages of development.

Key projects include the Arowojobe Link Bridge in Mende, Maryland, the Platinum Road in Igbokusu, and the Babafemi Dada Bridge in Yinka Folarin.

Under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), major bus terminals are under construction, including those at Abule Egba, Iyana Ipaja, and Ajah. Meanwhile, work continues on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, focusing on the Doyin Orile to Mile 2 section.

Omotoso also celebrated the 2024 completion of the Red Line rail project, a 27-kilometre route from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos, which began passenger operations on 15 October 2024 and is expected to serve 500,000 passengers daily.

The Red Line features eight stations, four vehicular overpasses, and three pedestrian bridges, integrating key terminals like Ikeja, Oshodi, and Yaba for seamless commuter travel.

Additionally, work has begun on the Blue Line extension, which will stretch from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.

“Our vision is to integrate the Red Line with the Blue Line, creating a robust rail network to meet Lagos’ growing transport needs,” Omotoso concluded.
