Lawmaker Proposes Amendment to Allow Trump a Third Term
A Republican representative in the House put forward a resolution on Thursday to modify the U.S. Constitution to permit President Donald Trump — and any future presidents — to be eligible for a third term in office.
According to Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Trump “has shown himself to be the sole modern figure capable of reversing the decline of our nation and restoring America to greatness, and he deserves the time needed to achieve that goal,” which is why he proposed extending the current limit of two elected terms.
“It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration,” Ogles said.
“He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and states, must do everything in our power to support him,” added Ogles, a hardline conservative serving his second term in the House.
Ogles introduced the proposal just three days after Trump was inaugurated for a second, non-consecutive term, becoming only the second U.S. president in history to do so.
Furthermore, the resolution follows two months after Rep. Dan Goldman, a Democrat from New York, presented a House resolution asserting that the twenty-second Amendment strictly limits presidents to two terms in total, reaffirming that the amendment applies to the 78-year-old Trump.
Franklin D. Roosevelt remains the only president who has served more than two terms.
The suggested amendment to the 22nd Amendment would enable a president to occupy the office for three terms, though only two of those could be consecutive.
This change could apply to Trump’s situation after his elections in 2016 and 2024 for two non-consecutive terms, potentially allowing him to run again in 2028 if Ogles’s amendment were approved.
