Nigeria, Brazil Strengthen Ties on AI, GovTech

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has led discussions with Brazilian officials on artificial intelligence and GovTech collaboration.

In a statement shared on Wednesday via LinkedIn, Tijani detailed his meeting with representatives from ApexBrasil and the Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises.

Also in attendance were ApexBrasil President Jorge Viana and Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Gacete.

The meeting forms part of Nigeria’s preparations for a Technology Exchange mission to Brazil, set for April 2025.

Tijani highlighted AI’s potential to drive sustainable development across the Global South and underscored Nigeria’s interest in adopting GovTech solutions to enhance public services.

“Beyond digital trade, we discussed the importance of bilateral cooperation. As leaders in the Global South, we have a great opportunity to harness AI for development. Brazil’s expertise in GovTech will be invaluable as we advance digital innovation in our public sector.”

The talks also recognised the role of IHS Towers, a Nigerian-founded telecom infrastructure company with a strong presence in Brazil.

Tijani emphasised the long-standing trade relationship between Nigeria and Brazil, noting that bilateral trade reached $2.9bn in 2022, primarily driven by petroleum and commodity exchanges.
