The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has contributed his thoughts on reforms and the Nigerian economy.
The Emir of Kano stated during the Gani Fawehimi Memorial Lecture on Wednesday that the current state of affairs in Nigeria is, at the very least, a necessary result of decades of careless economic management.
“I could stand here today and make some arguments that run counter to those that describe what we are going through and how most of it was completely predicted and preventable, but I won’t.
“Since explaining anything would benefit the government, which I don’t want to do, I have decided not to discuss the economy, the reforms, or anything else. Even though they don’t act like friends, they are still my friends.
“They don’t even have credulous people to come and explain what they are doing while I watch them being stewed.”Let them come and give Nigerians an explanation of the rationale for the policies being followed.”
Sanusi lavished praise on the late Nigerian civil rights lawyer Gani Fawehinmi, stating that while he was undoubtedly not the most intelligent, well-educated, or widely read lawyer, he was by far the most honest lawyer.
“You can be an expert and know the law, but what do you do with it?
“Do you use it to take what is not rightfully yours and give it to someone else? Do you use it to perpetuate injustice?
“How could members of this highly educated profession—the elite of our educated populace—permit themselves to be duped for financial gain by ignorant and impolite politicians? When you steal money from dishonest politicians and use your legal expertise to provide them what they lack, how do you feel about yourself in the mirror?” he questioned.
