Nigerian Journalist Shortlisted for Best Newcomer Award
Nigerian-born journalist, Richard Edoki, also known by his on-air name Richybongo, has been shortlisted for the Best Newcomer category at the prestigious 2025 National Hospital Radio Awards in the United Kingdom.
In a statement released on Saturday, Edoki shared his excitement about the nomination, highlighting the significance of the annual awards, which are organised by the Hospital Broadcasting Association (HBA). These awards recognise outstanding contributions to hospital broadcasting across the UK, honouring exceptional talent in the sector.
Edoki is the host of “African Vibe with Richybongo,” a radio show on the Community Hospital Broadcasting Network (CHBN) in Cornwall, England. The show, which airs every Sunday evening, aims to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of African communities while fostering inclusivity with local Cornish audiences. Through the show, Edoki explores various aspects of African culture, including music, food, fashion, and language, providing a platform that bridges cultural gaps and builds a shared sense of community.
Speaking about his show, Edoki expressed his satisfaction with how “African Vibe with Richybongo” has resonated with audiences, saying, “The show has brought the vibrant cultures of Africa to Cornish airwaves, fostering shared learning and creating a sense of belonging for all listeners. It has become a bridge between cultures, helping everyone appreciate the diversity that makes our world so unique.”
The show has been particularly impactful for the African diaspora in Cornwall, providing a “home away from home” for many Africans living in the region while also introducing the richness of African traditions to Cornish listeners. Edoki believes that the programme has helped promote mutual understanding and respect between the two cultures, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity.
Edoki’s nomination for the Best Newcomer category at the National Hospital Radio Awards serves as recognition of his dedication and innovative approach to broadcasting. The awards ceremony is set to take place on April 5, 2025, and Edoki’s nomination has been welcomed as a testament to his hard work and the positive impact of his show on local communities.
