Nigeria’s Government to Review 2003 Child Rights Act

The Nigerian government is set to review the 2003 Child Rights Act, with a strong commitment to strengthening child protection and development policies. Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, revealed this development, emphasising the importance of revising the legal framework to better safeguard children across the country.

During a visit to an orphanage in the Gwagwalada area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where she donated relief materials, Sulaiman-Ibrahim explained that this initiative is part of a broader effort launched by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to improve the welfare of children. The visit is seen as a precursor to nationwide reforms, with the FCT acting as a pilot for the proposed changes.

The minister assured that the government is fully committed to reviewing adoption protocols, orphanage certification, and ensuring zero tolerance for child abuse. She also acknowledged the role of the media in sensitizing the public and advocating for these essential changes to ensure the protection of vulnerable citizens.

The review initiative will also focus on improving the overall social welfare system, reinforcing the government’s commitment to child protection and social development.
