Ruto Inaugurates 42-Member Taskforce on GBV, Femicide

A 42-member task force on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide was officially sworn in at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi on Tuesday.

The team, chaired by former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza, has been tasked with reviewing and recommending strategies to address the escalating cases of GBV and femicide in Kenya.

The task force, appointed by President William Ruto on January 10, includes notable members such as Ann Ireri, Sam Thenya, James Nombi, Michael Kariuki, Faith Odhiambo, Linda Musumba, and Seth Masese, among others.

They have been directed to report to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and are expected to present their findings and recommendations to the President within 90 days.

The initiative follows a sharp increase in GBV and femicide cases across the country. Reports indicate that at least 97 femicide cases were recorded last year, alongside approximately 4,000 cases of GBV each month.

In the Gazette Notice announcing the task force, President Ruto stressed the urgency of addressing the issue, stating:

“The rise in GBV and femicide cases inflicts immense emotional and physical harm on individuals and communities, further deepening gender inequalities.”

The task force’s mandate includes strengthening institutional, legal, and policy frameworks to prevent GBV and femicide, improving mechanisms for investigation and prosecution, and ensuring comprehensive support for survivors.

President Ruto expressed confidence that the team’s efforts would bridge the existing gaps in addressing these violations and promote a safer, more equitable society.
