Senate Backs Recycling Credit Scheme To Empower 50m Nigerians With Healthcare, Green Jobs

The Senate has endorsed ongoing moves by the GreenSpree Nigeria Initiative to empower no fewer than 50 million Nigerians with healthcare and green job opportunities as part of a broader strategy to foster national development and tackle climate change.

The chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Senator Seriake Dickson, stated that by endorsing the GreenSpree Nigeria Initiative, the Senate was prioritising a greener, more equitable future for all Nigerians.

The lawmaker, who disclosed that the Senate was collaborating with the federal government to achieve the goal, remarked that the groundbreaking scheme will position Nigeria at the forefront of climate action, social welfare, and economic innovation in Africa.

For her part, the Vice Chair, Senate Committee for Ecology and Climate Change, Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe, added that the initiative signified a transformative leap in both economic and environmental sustainability.

She stressed that GreenSpree was not just about tackling plastic waste, it’s about forging a new path for national development, with real opportunities for Nigerians to participate in shaping a greener and more equitable future.

She added that the monumental initiative comes at a time when Nigeria was seeking to fulfill its commitments under the SDG decade of action.

“This innovative scheme seeks to empower 50 million Nigerians, especially in rural communities, with access to universal healthcare wallets,free greenridegreen transport token,green innovation grants and green jobs, as part of a broader strategy to foster national development and tackle climate change,” she said.

The project’s Lead Climate Finance and Circular Economy Advisor, Mr Victor Agih, remarked: “GreenSpree is the game-changer in the quest for a circular economy in Africa adding with this initiative, they are creating a dynamic ecosystem where environmental sustainability and social progress go hand in hand.

“GreenSpree, the first African plastic credit program of its kind, is designed to drive a circular economy by incentivizing plastic waste recycling through a National Plastic Recycling Credit Scheme.

“The initiative will not only contribute to the global agenda of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also create a sustainable framework for transforming Nigeria’s waste management industry.

“GreenSpree will accelerate SDG targets including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).”
