Survivors of Niger Tanker Blast Moved to Specialist Centres
The survivors of the Niger tanker explosion have been transferred to tertiary medical centres for enhanced care.
Following the tragic incident, which claimed over 80 lives at the weekend, President Bola Tinubu directed the relocation of the injured victims to receive specialised treatment.
On Monday, Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated: “20 patients have been admitted to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital in Abuja.”
“Additionally, two other patients have been transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja.”
“All the patients were accompanied by a nurse and family members to the designated referral centres to ensure seamless care,” the statement added.
Ibrahim conveyed the gratitude of the Niger State Government to the Nigerian Government for its prompt and effective response to the tragedy.
The incident is one of many tanker explosions that have afflicted Nigeria in recent years. In January, at least five people lost their lives when a petrol-laden tanker lost control and ignited in Agbor, Delta State.
In October last year, a fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State claimed over 170 lives and left many others injured.
In response to these recurring tragedies, President Tinubu has vowed to establish a committee to investigate the incidents and introduce safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
Speaking on Sunday, Idris added that his ministry would launch awareness campaigns on the safe transport of fuel tankers, road safety practices, and the dangers of scooping spilled fuel.
