Mike Ejiofor, former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), has spoken about the issue of kidnapping.
In an interview with Arise TV, Ejiofor highlighted the case of Margaret Emefiele, the wife of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele, who was kidnapped. He disclosed that the money that was used as ransom was marked and it enabled authorities to trace the funds.
However, Ejiofor emphasized the prevailing fear and panic among the public when their relatives are kidnapped. He said victims’ families often hesitate to involve security agencies due to threats from kidnappers, who warn of dire consequences if law enforcement is contacted.
In Ejiofor’s words: “When Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele’s wife was kidnapped the money used was marked and later traced. But because of fear and panic, members of the public whose relations are kidnapped will not want to get the security agencies involved because the kidnappers warn that if they get the security agencies involved, they will kill the victims”.
