Wike Defends Strategy to Drive Economy

In a spirited defence of the administration’s developmental priorities, the minister of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, explained the focus on infrastructure as the foundation for economic growth.

Addressing concerns over the perceived lack of emphasis on human capital development, he argued that infrastructural projects create significant job opportunities, particularly for young people, and are instrumental in stimulating broader economic activity.

The minister pointed out that employment is often misunderstood as limited to government positions, but the reality is different. For instance, each road construction project in the FCT engages hundreds of workers, creating direct and indirect jobs for the local population. He urged citizens to recognise the broader impact of these initiatives, which not only enhance living conditions but also empower communities by providing sustainable employment opportunities.

By prioritising infrastructure, he stated that the administration has laid the groundwork for long-term economic development. The minister added that once these projects are in place, efforts can shift to complementing them with human capital initiatives, ensuring a holistic approach to governance and development.
